A man who has been allegedly defrauded by New Heights Travel says the Hajj and Umrah operator owes at least two and a half million Rand in loans and fees to Muslims who have booked with the organization.

Mohammad Mayet was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about Fazila Malek who owns New Heights Travel.

The South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) recently urged Mu’tamireen to exercise caution before booking Umrah packages with New Heights Travel.

The hajj body says it received a number of Umrah complaints about New Heights from Mu’tamireen.

It’s alleged that New Heights has failed to refund customers who had booked and paid for Umrah packages, which did not materialise.

Mayet who is among three others who have allegedly loaned Malek exorbitant amounts of money while she was on hajj says, she owes over two million Rand to at least about thirty disgruntled clients.

“We’ve tabulated all the figures that she owes different people and it amounts to just under two and half million Rand. One person had given a loan during the hajj period last year to pay for some hotels. He had given a loan of four hundred thousand rands. To date she still owes him three hundred and nineteen thousand rands.”

Mayet says his daughter has formed a WhatsApp group consisting of people that were allegedly defrauded by Malek.

He says some of the people have been in contact with Malek but have not been successful in getting their money refunded.

“I know of many people on the group that had been in communication with her and all of a sudden communication had just been stopped by Fazila Malek.”

Radio Islam has been unsuccessful numerous times in trying to contact Fazila Malek through different mediums to afford her the right of reply, but she has been unavailable for the interview or for comment.
