Joburg emergency services say they are continuing to monitor low-lying areas including informal settlements following heavy downpours over the weekend.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Sunday warned that heavy rainfall in Gauteng was set to continue until Monday with possible flooding in some areas.

The province has been experiencing heavy downpours since Thursday.

Joburg Emergency Service Robert Mulaudzi says no major incident were reported overnight and they remain on high alert.

“We continue to monitor most of our low-lying areas, our informal settlements, areas like Kaalfontein, River Stream in Midrand, Klipville in Soweto and Jukskei around Alexandra. We also want to encourage all our motorists to extend a safe following distance.”

Mulaudzi has also urged motorists to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges to prevent incidents where vehicles might be swept away.
