A political analyst has told Radio Islam, while the state capture inquiries have implicated individuals in corrupt activities, there is hardly any concrete evidence to arrest and prosecute them including making them pay back the money.
Nteboheleng Tsehla was referring to new Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo among others who have allegedly benefited from conflicts of interest and corruption.
Makhubo was voted in as mayor on Wednesday – but there have been questions about his past.
Former Mayor Herman Mashaba laid charges against Makhubo, claiming he had pocketed R30 million.
While Makhubo has been heavily criticised by the DA and EFF he denies any wrongdoing.
Tsehla says state capture inquiries are not doing enough to put corrupt officials behind bars.
“So even with Geoff Makhubo, it is well know he has been accused of the thirty million that was invested in his company. But the fact that he can still run for office and nothing has been found of concrete evidence and he claims that he’s been cleared. We then having to find that from a legal point of view allow to run for such an office and there’s nothing really we can do.”
Tsehla also commented on the appointment of Kholeka Gcaleka as Deputy Public Protector saying it’s unfair to judge based on the fact that she’s politically connected.
The DA and Economic Freed Fighters (EFF) have both objected to the nomination of advocate Kholeka Gcaleka after it emerged that she has worked as a legal advisor for former minister Malusi Gigaba and Menzi Simelani.
“It would make no send to think that no one has any kind of political affiliation whether it be with the DA or the EFF or have any kind of political idea or mention themselves within their personal capacity.”
Tsehla says while the African National Congress (ANC) stands accused of putting forward candidates who have questions to answer about their activities, it’s not President Cyril Ramaphosa who promised to obliterate corruption that votes for individuals for positions but the ANC caucus.
