The Competition Commission has found that mobile data in South Africa is too expensive.

The commission released its data service market inquiry final report on Monday.

It found that mobile operators MTN and Vodacom dominated the data market in South Africa and are charging higher prices compared to other countries they operate in.

The commission says service providers must reduce excessive data prices within two months or face prosecution.

It also found data pricing is anti-poor.

Deputy Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu says Communications Minister Stella Ndebeni-Abrahams must table the report before the National Assembly within ten days as required by the Competition Act of the Constitution.

Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel says data is the currency of daily interaction and prices must be lowered.
