A writer at online publication Daily Vox says a sewing co-op in Tembisa needs a lot more support from communities and people to be viable.

The community initiative is growing jobs and assisting women to acquire skills and also to empower themselves.

A co-op is a group of businesses who form partnerships to address the needs of communities.

Daily Vox’s Fatima Moosa says the sewing co-ops Joyce Phala who started about eight years ago has emphasized the challenges they face on a daily basis without support.

“There’s not a lot of opportunities and there’s a lot of support the women need and they don’t get that support all of the time.”

Moosa says while Phala has indicated the Social Development Department has been trying to assist the co-ops with contracts, they require a lot more support and business from people.
