As Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba hangs up his mayoral chain on Wednesday, the businessperson turned politician has told Radio Islam he has no regrets but it was a brutal mayorship.
Mashaba’s exit comes after three years in office.
His election ended the African National Congress’ (ANC) more than 20-year rule in the country’s economic hub.
Mashaba says he is satisfied with his achievements as mayor of Johannesburg and has no regrets.
“At the end of the day I can only really talk about my mayorship. It was a very brutal one, very difficult one with managing a seven-way coalition government where I was not really prepared for this, I was not trained. I was just put into this deep end and gave my all to ensure that we operate all us with respect.”
Mashaba says he did not jump ship before he was pushed because of the dire financial crisis in the city Johannesburg at the ANC allegedly claims.
“Would you believe after three years of ANC cut and paste the issue around the finances of the city. The city of Johannesburg is audited every single year. Just two weeks ago, Moodies releases the city of Johannesburg’s finances and actually applauded the city of Johannesburg for the massive improvements in our finances.”
Mashaba’s says the best for the city of Johannesburg it not to have “ANC looters” to come back into the mayoral position and it would be unfortunate if council would allow that to happen.
