A Soweto African National Congress (ANC) councilor has told Radio Islam the attitude of Soweto residents contribute a large extent to non-payment of electricity to Eskom.
Residents have offered to pay Eskom a flat rate of just a R150 a month as the power utility continues to cut electricity to households for failing to pay for services.
The residents were dealt a blow in the Johannesburg High court this week, where their urgent demand that their electricity be re-connected was dismissed.
Soweto owes Eskom almost R20-billion, which is almost half of the total local municipal debt owed to the electricity utility.
Soweto ANC councilor Mpho Sesedinyane says those who cannot afford to pay for the full electricity cost they consume should only pay R 150.
“We are not necessarily saying everybody must get a blanket approach on R150. Those who live below the threshold for an example those who have an income of three thousand five hundred are expected to pay at least that R150. And those who earn above three thousand five hundred on the gross income of their family are expected to pay Eskom.”
Sesedinyane says a flat rate for electricity could help foster a culture of payment among Soweto residents.
