Muslims in India have been dealt a blow after the country’s Supreme Court handed the ownership of a disputed religious site in the northern town of Ayodhya to Hindus for the construction of a temple.
Muslims will be given a five-acre land at an alternative site in Ayodhya, in northern Uttar Pradesh state.
Al Jazeera reports the five-judge bench, in a unanimous decision over the Babri Masjid site, asked the government to set up of a trust that will construct a temple for a Hindu diety.
The top court says a structure existed under the Babri Mosque, which was not built on vacant land.
The 16th Century Babri masjid was demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992, sparking riots that killed nearly 2,000 people, most of them Muslims.
Muslims say they prayed at the Babri masjid for centuries until the idol of Ram deity was surreptitiously placed inside the masjid in 1949.
