The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba must explain why the city has not paid service providers responsible for its Internet Communication Technology (ICT) system.
.
It’s emerged that the ICT system is down because of alleged non-payment of service providers.
The ANC in Gauteng says they have learned that the city owes millions to its service provider.
Joburg City upgraded its ICT systems after it was the victim of a network breach last month.
A group calling itself the Shadow Kill Hackers, threatened to upload all the data on the internet if the City did not pay a ransom of four Bitcoins.
Speaking to Radio Islam, the ANC’s Gauteng spokesperson Jolidee Matongo says, the ICT downtime is very frustrating for residents and Mashaba must explain.
“We have said they do not have the money. So if they had the money, they would have paid by now. But quite interestingly, they do not also have a valid contract with the current service provider, because the service providers contract came to an end. It was extended, it expired, it was extended for the second time. It has not been extended further.”
Matongo says they have made a call to the provincial government to intervene and resolve the matter as the downtime affects the revenue collection of the city of Joburg.
