The JMPD has told Radio Islam they cannot confirm whether a horror crash that killed a Muslim family of six on the N12 West near Lenasia was a result of a group of criminals that were fleeing from police as investigations into the accident are continuing.
Six people including a 2-month-old baby were killed in the accident that has left many people distraught and concerned about the carnage on South Africa’s roads.
It’s understood the VW Polo the family were travelling in collided head-on with an Audi on Saturday night.
The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says the cause of the accident is being investigated.
“At this stage the accident still has to be investigated but there is a docket of five counts of culpable homicide which is now leveled against the driver of the Audi which crashed with the Polo. But the details to it, how it happened, why it happened, that has to be investigated.”
Minnaar says an additional charge of culpable homicide will be added to the charges after the sixth family passed away on Sunday.
Meanwhile Minnaar also spoke about the reopening of the M2 highway after it was closed in August last year for emergency repairs.
