A political analyst has told Radio Islam, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announcement that it is considering contesting for the mayoral position in Johannesburg is just political speak.

EFF leader Julius Malema on Monday indicated announced that his party is considering contesting for the mayoral position, adding that the EFF leadership must see themselves in municipal leadership position.

Malema says he gets worried that every time there is a position available in the municipality people talk about the Democratic Alliance (DA) and African National Congress (ANC) but not about the EFF, yet his party is ready to govern.

He adds that former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba was well liked by the EFF because he had cooperated with the party on certain issues, including the insourcing of workers.

Political analyst Nteboheleng Tsehla says the comments by Malema is just political speak.

“The EFF doesn’t really have the capacity to put in their own candidate that will actually run and win a position. And this being said, this is because they didn’t really didn’t get the votes and even if they did, I don’t think the DA would support them they supported the DA in the previous elections.”

Nteboheleng says the ANC does probably have a chance to get back the mayors office.

“If you were listening to what Herman Mashaba said and what Mmusi Maimane said, they were speaking about how the DA does not have the vision to run a non-racial party. Herman Mashaba said that the DA was not aligned with of ignoring the poor.”

The DA has several people in mind to succeed Mashaba, including DA member of the Gauteng provincial legislature Makashule Gana and Johannesburg member of the mayoral committee Funzi Ngobeni.

Internal DA nominations for the position close on Thursday.
