Gauteng EMS District Manager for the Joburg Region Donald Baloyi says Gauteng is the only province that is yet to be fully provincialized.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management services are involved in high level discussions with the Gauteng Provincial Emergency Services on the provincialisation of ambulance services.

The City has in the past been providing ambulance services on an agency basis on behalf of Gauteng EMS.

Ambulance services have been under scrutiny for some time now, with residents complaining they wait forever for an ambulance to assist them or in some cases, ambulances even fail to arrive at all.

Baloyi says there are a number of benefits of the provincialisation.

“You are doing away with multiple reporting lines, multiple control centers. Then you have one control center where all the medical related calls will be logged and dispatched.”

Joburg EMS Robert Muludzi says provincialisation of ambulance services will add to the current service being offered.

He say the province will still provide the ambulance service, while Joburg EMS will respond to other incidents including motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.

“That  frustration where the residents used to have of maybe shortages of resources and other things, it means now maybe this process will actually make sure that those gaps are addressed.”

Mulaudzi says no staff will be affected by the provincialisation of ambulance services.
