Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has confirmed that repair work on the closed section of the M2 highway will be completed by the end of October.
The City of Johannesburg started with the R 58 million emergency repairs to a section of the highway in August last year after the structural integrity of the concrete was severely reduced.
The closure of the stretch of the M2 highway caused peak-hour congestion on both the M1 south and north forcing commuters to rely on the N3 and N12 for their daily commute.
Mashaba says the bridge will be reopened at the end of October.
“A ceremony will be held to mark this occasion, at which point an operational plan will be announced and rolled out over the week to ensure the motorway is fully operational come Monday, 4 November.”
Mashaba says that only 6% of Johannesburg’s over 900 bridges are in good condition.
