Political analyst and North West University Professor Andre Duvenhage says the fragmented and discontent in the embattled eThekwini region is a result of the battles between groups aligned to former president Jacob Zuma versus President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lines.

Ramaphosa is expected to meet with party branches in eThekwini region in his capacity as the head of the ANC on Thursday.

According to a party statement, the meeting will be held at the Durban City hall and will, focus on unity within the organisation and governance issues.

Duvenhage says the axing of the mayor Zandile Gumede created instability in the region.

He says eThekwini may be a weak point for Ramaphosa and its critical that he unite the region.

“I think for him it is important that that region is stabilized, that he can work on a basis taking the country forward with the support of eThekwini.”

Duvenhge says eThekwini is a very important area to control politically as KZN is the biggest ANC province in the country.

“In that sense, very important and very important to the government and at a time when identity politics is becoming rife.”

Ramaphosa’s visit comes amid tensions in the region as it approaches a crucial elective conference that is expected to be held at the end of the year.
