An energy expert says Eskom is holding South Africans to ransom.
The power utility announced that they would be implementing Stage 2 load shedding blaming the severe power constraints in the country on a broken coal conveyor belt at the Medupi power station.
Eskom also says that five electricity-generating units are unavailable due to boiler tube leaks including delays in the return to service of units that are on planned maintenance and it is struggling with a limited diesel supply.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Ted Blom says the impact of Eskom’s load shedding has a severe impact on the country.
“The impact of the load shedding and the high tariff increases over the last ten years have resulted in a very depressed economy, GDP that’s growing at less than 1% a year and three million jobs that have been lost in the process.”
Blom says he is very cynical about Eskom and their ethics.
“I think their ethics stink and it’s really a pity because it reflects on the whole country’s ethics. Which every month they take on Nersa there’s going to be an incident of some sort anyway in that month because that’s the just broken way in which Eskom operates.”
Last month Eskom said it wasn’t planning load shedding in September and October.
