India’s Supreme Court will conclude its final hearing in the land dispute that has caused much tension in Ayodha.

Hindus believe that Ayodha, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, is considered to be the birthplace of one of their most revered deities.

The Babri Mosque has been built on that land since the 16th century by the Mughal emperor. The mosque was one of the largest mosques in the area. In 1992 the mosque was demolished by Hindu Mobs sparking a riot that killed nearly 2000 people, since then there has been calls to build a temple on the land where the Babri Mosque once stood.

Many Hindus believe that the mosque was constructed on top of the ruins of a Hindu temple which was demolished. There is no real evidence of this statement thus far.

The case is being heard by five of the top judges who will determine who the land belongs to. A verdict is expected between the first two weeks of November.
