A newlywed bride and three members of her family have drowned in a reservoir in India while trying to take a selfie.

Police say they were part of a group of six people who were holding hands near a fast flowing river near Pambar dam in Tamil Nadu when one of them slipped pulling the rest down.

The woman’s husband was able to save his sister but the others drowned.

According to a study by the US National Library of Medicine, India has the highest number of recorded selfie deaths in the world, accounting for about half of the 259 reported fatalities between 2011 and 2017.

Russia and Pakistan are in second and third place.
