Justice Project South Africa says questions needs to be raised about why an Ekurhuleni metro police supervisor failed to uphold the law after her colleague was allegedly found to be drunk on duty.

City of Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina confirmed that the Metro Police officer and his supervisor have been suspended after a video emerged showing an allegedly drunk Metro police officer while on duty.

The video shows an interaction between the Metro cop and a man who lodged a complaint over a vehicle after the officer nearly crashed into the man in Benoni.

The metro police officer also allegedly threatened to shoot the man while he was recording him.

Justice Project South Africa’s Howard Dembovsky says the supervisor can face serious charges for not upholding the law.

“It would appear that his supervisor, the lady in the video, didn’t take him to a police station, did not detain him and did not lay criminal charges against him. She can be charged with defeating the ends of justice.”

Dembovksy says it is difficult to respect law enforcement officers when they break the law on so many different levels the like this Ekurhuleni Metro Officer did.
