A car dealer from Jules Street in Jeppestown has told Radio Islam how the holy Qur’an was the only item that was left un-burnt after looters set a car dealership on fire.

An emotional Mohammed Haffejjee says he lost everything after looters destroyed his car stand on Monday.

Haffejjee described how to the police could not control the crowd resulting in the torching of several cars.

He says the car stand next to his was completely burnt down, but the Qur’an remained untouched.

“Selbro, they burnt the entire garage, but only the Qur’an didn’t burn. We witnessed it and if somebody says ‘if you guys are Muslim guys, next door is Muslim guys and you saying only the Qur’an didn’t burn, Selbro there’s a guy by the name of Ravi, he was in there and he witnessed it himself.”

Haffejee says the actions of the looters had nothing to do with xenophobia.

“It’s not xenophobia, we’re South Africans. They basically are looting, its criminal, it’s got nothing to do with xenophobia. They’re hitting local shops.”

Haffejee says has thanked all the people that assisted him during the chaos that erupted in Jeppestown.
