The Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa says the country has the moral responsibility to ensure that oppression in other parts of the world is stopped.

Ml Ebrahim Bham was speaking during the Jashan-e-Azadi in solidarity with Kashmiris programme organized by the Pakistan-Southern Africa Trade Federation at the Suleiman Nana Memorial Trust Hall in Crosby on Saturday.

Tensions have soared between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s move to strip India’s portion of Kashmir of its autonomy and bring it under Delhi’s direct rule.

In the lead-up to the move, India sent thousands of additional troops to the disputed region, imposed a crippling curfew, shut down telecommunications and internet, and arrested political leaders.

Ml Bham says the world including South Africa who received help from other nations to free the country from Apartheid needs to stand united with one voice in solidarity with Kashmir.

“After so many long and painful years of suffering the people of Kashmir are undergoing, it is time for all righteous human beings, Muslim and otherwise to say enough is enough.”

Dr. Khalid Mirza, member of the Overseas Pakistani Advisory Council says South Africa has a role to play in assisting to resolve the India/Kashmir dispute.

“The South African government currently is one of the members of the Security Council in the United Nations and they have a very important role to play and I am thankful to the South African government that they have had opportunities to listen to us and they are going to play a very positive role in the upcoming events which are going to be held.”

Thousands rallied across Pakistan on Friday in mass demonstrations protesting against Delhi’s actions in Indian-administered Kashmir in the most ambitious public protests targeting India in years.
