Humanitarian and international climate and environment activist Catherine Constantinides says the media has a very important role to play in conscientising South Africans on the current climate crisis.
Constantinides was speaking to Radio Islam on Thursday about the arrival of Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg in New York after travelling for 15 days on a sailboat.
The teen is well known for her school strikes, which has inspired a worldwide hashtag Fridays for Future Climate Change protest movement.
Constantinides says Thunberg has become a global phenomenon and has taken it upon herself to demand action and demand concrete answers to the climate crisis that affects every citizen around the world.
“Her courage to truly bring leaders to account when it comes to the climate crisis we see is really wonderful. It’s not only fighting an important, but it is detrimental crisis we see unfolding and we are not giving it the attention it deserves.”
On arrival, Thunberg had a strong message for US President Donald Trump asking him to listen to science.
“It is insane that a 16-year-old had to cross the Atlantic Ocean to make a stand.”
Thunberg will be attending the UN Climate summit next month and the COP 25 Climate Change Conference in December.
