The Tshwane MMC for Roads and Transport, Sheila Lynn Senkubuge says extensive damages have been caused to the Tshwane CBD after protestors went on a looting spree in the city.
Police fired rubber bullets in the capital on Wednesday after several foreign owned shops were looted and set alight.
Protests started on Tuesday after a taxi driver was killed allegedly during confrontation with suspected drug dealers.
Senkubuge have accused criminal elements of taking over protests in the Pretoria CBD.
“We think that what happened was that there were opportunistic elements where criminality started cropping up. The drivers really wanted to simply protest against drugs within the CBD and during that protest a number of criminal elements crept up and looting started and things got out of hand.”
Senkubuge says following a meeting, the taxi operators have agreed to step down and allow law enforcement to conduct an investigation and make arrests.
