The Executive mayor of the City of Tshwane has told Radio Islam that while there isn’t a tender awarded to Huawei, there is a tender to turn Pretoria into a smart city.

Stevens Mokgalapa has denied that Huawei Technologies South Africa were awarded a tender worth R1-billion to make Tshwane a “smart city”.

Mokgalapa indicated he would also take the Sunday Times newspaper to the Press Ombudsman and request corrections regarding reports on his recent Huawei-sponsored trip to China.

He says there is no such tender in the city and there is no R1bn tender for a smart city.

“The only tender that has been advertised and it was advertised on the 29th of July, and closing on the 28th of August with a further extension to the 13th of September. This is a tender calling for the development and maintenance of a safe city solution for the city of Tshwane at the value of R 26 million for a period of three years.”

Mokgalapa also says that while his trip to China was sponsored by Huawei, it was work related to get insight on smart cities and the 4th Industrial Revolution.

“That was for work and I took the opportunity by Huawei to come and learn and see and do best practice about how a smart city looks like and how a safe city looks like.”

Mokgalapa says no promises were made to Huawei and the R26m tender was still open to the public, with no requirement for the appointed service provider to partner with Huawei in any way or form.
