The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa says its annual general meeting is an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the ulama that serve the organization.

Jamiat SA’s annual AGM is expected to take place on Sunday at the Nurul Islam hall in Lenasia.

The AGM also focuses on providing updates on the various activities and services for the past year.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Jamiat SA’s Ml Ahmed Mia says the prominent Muslim body has evolved over the years to serve the community.

“If you look at the initial history and the stages of the Jamiat, you looking at the 70’s and 80’s, the efforts of the Jamiat were confined to a couple of departments. Subsequently as the needs of the community grew, so did the activities and services of the Jamiatul Ulama grow.”

Ml Mia says they have also been involved in the initiation of a number of projects including the launch of Radio Islam and the South African National Halaal Authority (Sanha).

“So we were sort of founding members of these organizations. But it’s important to know that these organizations themselves are independent, so they have their own annual general meetings where they present their reports.”

Ml Mia says anyone can become a member of the Jamiat by completing a membership form.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa was established in 1923, which makes it one of the oldest Muslim organization in South Africa.
