Chief Economist Dawie Roodt says South Africa is in a deep crisis with an economy in a downward spiral and the African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners are to blame.

In an op-ed, Roodt states that the astounding levels of corruption and plundering in the country is certainly a reason for most South Africans to experience a feeling of despair.

He says unemployment is the highest it has been in decades and a governing party is at war with itself.

Roodt says Cyril Ramaphosa is a weak president and has not been able to make a significant difference in the year and half he has been in office.

“The reality is that we are in very deep trouble and the longer we wait the deeper we going to get into trouble and the more difficult it’s going to become to get out of this.”

Roodt says Ramaphosa’s needs to lead the country out of the crisis.

“What we need now is a president, a leader, a political leader that is a little bit, let me use the word ‘ruthless’. Somebody that really can stand up and say ‘follow me, we are in very, very deep trouble. It is not going to be difficult, but we must move forward and it is going to be difficult.”

Roodt says even if a magic wand is waved to get rid of all the corruption and incompetence in the state and SOEs, the perilous condition of the state’s finances will need an extraordinary attempt to save the country from further economic collapse.
