Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and Western Cape premier Helen Zille says she joined the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) because she wants to stay in South Africa and reflect on her experiences when she led the party.
Zille joined the organization as senior policy fellow, writer and analyst on Sunday.
She led the DA between 2007 and 2015.
Zille says she will be writing and speaking about liberal ideas and solutions to South Africa’s problems.
“I want to reflect on my experiences and look at the future of South Africa and understand the issues that are driving the system, where we are going wrong and what the solutions are. I believe those solutions are firmly anchored in our constitutional values which are profoundly liberal solutions and I will be working very hard to promote those.”
Zille says she also plans to help build support to stop expropriation of land without compensation; protect savings and pensions; halt efforts to “destroy the South African healthcare sector through the National Health Insurance (NHI) and adopt empowerment policies based on actual disadvantage rather than race.
