The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says the attack by the Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC) on the organisation shows his basic lack of understanding of the foundation.

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule described Derek Hanekom as a wedge-driver and a charlatan who was making his mark through the ownership of the Kathrada Foundation.

This comes after Hanekom confirmed that he met with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to discuss the vote of no confidence against former President Jacob Zuma.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the foundations Neeshan Balton has denied Hanekom owns the foundation and that he uses it to fight his political battles.

“We are governed by boards constituted primarily by Kathrada himself and it is a collective of that board that gives the direction of the foundation. So to claim that one individual own is it, I think is complete lack of understanding or a is a weak attempt at trying to thrust some kind of weird aspersion on the foundation or on Hanekom.”

Commenting on the possible fractured state of the ANC, Balton says there are elements in party who clearly are not in support of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s renewal campaign and will do everything possible to damage the image of those who support the president.
