A political analyst has told Radio Islam South Africa should not be concerned by the election of Boris Johnson as the new UK prime minister.

Johnson has been elected leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party and, by default, the country’s next prime minister.

He is expected to become prime minister on Wednesday, after Theresa May formally steps down.

Political analyst and North West University Professor Andre Duvenhage says South Africans don’t have to be worried about Johnson.

“On eyelevel maybe he is a bit of a strange figure. He was involved in a number of controversies, but generally speaking, I don’t think he can derail British politics in such a way that it will have a very negative impact on South African politics on the short term.”

While in his victory speech, the 55-year-old indicated his campaign message had been to deliver Brexit, Duvenhage says it’s in the British interest not leave the European Union.

“If I was the advisor of Boris Johnson, I would say ‘go back to the people, get the referendum and see if we can stay within the European Union.”

Johnson has vowed to negotiate a new Brexit divorce deal with the European Union before the scheduled October 31 deadline, but Brussels has insisted it will not reopen negotiations.
