The South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc) says at least one thousand seven South Africans have already departed the country for the annual pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia.

Hajj 2019 is expected to draw millions of pilgrims from almost every country across the globe.

The annual hajj is a massive logistical operation that takes months of planning to accommodate the largest gathering of Muslims anywhere in the world.

South Africa has been granted a quota of four thousand for this year’s hajj.

Sahuc’s Moaaz Casoo says the last flight out of South Africa is on the 5th of August.

“So far everything is running smoothly in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We have had an incident free Hajj thus far. Around 1,700 pilgrims from South Africa have departed. The remaining will depart South Africa by latest the 5th of August. We pray that the hajj remains incident free for all South Africans and Muslims throughout the world.”

This year’s hajj starts on the 9th of August and ends on the 14th of August.
