The Awwal Socio-Economic Research Institute (ASRI) says the victimization of Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) may be race related.

A commotion broke out on Thursday when EFF MP’s disrupted Gordhan saying he should not be allowed to address MP’s, as he is a ‘constitutional delinquent’.

The red berets were eventually kicked out of the portfolio committee on public enterprises after the incident.

Asri’s Director of Programmes Ebrahim Fakir says the visuals of the commotion clearly show that EFF MP’s wanted to physically attack Gordhan.

“This wasn’t just the usual disruption, raising points of order, raising points of processes. It was almost a physical confrontation and it looked like it was a bunch of schoolyard kids. In fact its worse, it looks like a bunch of common garden variety criminals who were going to accost someone.”

Fakir says there is more to the confrontation than what is being perceived.

“I think that there’s something else going on and I think there is and it’s not so subtle anymore, no one’s talking about it. I think there’s an actual race dimension to this.”

Gordhan says he will not be intimidated by the EFF and that trying to prevent him from presenting his budget was a “defence of state capture”.
