Sunday Times journalist Qaanitah Hunter has thanked South Africans for their support after winning the Nat Nakasa Award for Courageous Journalism.
The 2019 Nat Nakasa Awards ceremony of the South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) took place on Saturday.
The criteria for the award requires journalists to show integrity and report fearlessly, display a commitment to serve the people of South Africa and resist censorship amongst other criteria.
Hunter who started her illustrious career at a Muslim community radio station in Johannesburg in 2011 has also worked for the Daily Maverick, Eyewitness News and the Mail & Guardian.
Hunter says she’s humbled by the award.
“It’s obviously a huge honor that I have won this prestigious award that’s usually given to people at the culmination of their careers. I am just at the beginning, I am probably the youngest person to have won this award and I am so eternally grateful for the judges to have selected me.”
Former press ombudsman Joe Thloloe who presented to the award to Hunter says South Africa is blessed with an abundance of courageous journalists who work in big newsrooms, small broadcasting studios, in tiny rural news operations, trying and succeeding to tell the truth facing dangers on a daily basis.
