The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says its visit to the Mamelodi Hospital where an elderly woman was tied up to the foot of a bench forms parts of a broader investigation into the state of healthcare in Gauteng.

The incident of Martha Marais tied up to the bench on the cold floor two weeks ago has angered people across the country.

The SAHRC says infrastructure issues, staff shortages and a lack of beds are common problems at hospitals it inspected.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the SAHRC’s Mathew Du Plessis says while they have investigated at least five hospitals in Gauteng in the past 18 months, they are yet to release their findings.

“The head of Gauteng Department of Health has already come before the commission, I believe it was April this year to discuss certain findings or observations that we’ve made. The Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital for example, we went there to investigate cases of infection with children.”

Other hospitals the Sahrc investigated includes Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal, Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus.
