A number of Lenasia based organizations and residents have banded together and taken on the task of cleaning up the Lenasia Post Office which has been become extremely neglected.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth, Eastwave Radio, Lenasia Rising Sun newspaper, students from the Masjid-e-Ashraf in Extension 11B and the Anchorville Service Station have joined hands to clean the post office under the theme “Operation Blackjack.”

The organizations says the initiative is part of their voluntary service to their community and in honour of the youth who gave their lives in the June 1976 student uprising.

Former Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi says the Lenasia Post Office is a public space that has become an embarrassment in the community.

He says their message is simple,  “We’ll do it!”

“The place has really been an eyesore. It hasn’t been cleaned for over a year. The grass has been overgrown, the trees, there’ve been blackjacks all over the place. It’s really been a nuisance to the public. We thought we needed to do something about it. I am hoping the minister of postal services is looking at this video and seeing what the community is doing.”

Anyone wanting to assist with the cleanup for the post office can contact the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation in Lenasia.
