The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has declared South Africa’s 6th democratic general elections as free and fair.

The IEC announced the elections results at the Tshwane Results Operation Centre (Roc) on Saturday.

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) won 57.5% of the parliamentary vote, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) picked up 20.8% and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took 10.8%.

In 2014, the ANC won 62% of votes, the DA 22% and the EFF 6%.

IEC Chairman Glen Mashinini says celebrating 25-years of democracy, South Africa remains firmly rooted to the democratic ideals that the country adopted in 1994 when the first democratic elections took place.

“Our country remains a shining beacon of democracy and human rights for all.”

The Muslim Al Jama’ah party also managed to win one parliamentary seat in the general elections.
