A cybercrime expert from business continuity services company IronTree says Apple’s iOS operating system for mobiles phones and smart devices is more secure than then Android operating systems.

Steven Cohen was speaking to Radio Islam about cyber-hacking and why it’s important to ensure that the computers, notebooks and electronic gadgets we use are adequately protected from hackers.

Cohen says Apple’s iPhones are less likely to be hacked.

“Apple operating system the iOS operates in what they call a ‘sandbox environment’. So each app works in its own perimeter and it can’t affect other things on your iPhone. Android is similar, but make sure that you only download stuff from the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, the Android operating system allows you to install applications that are not as secure as the Apple one as they don’t through the rigorous process.”

Speaking about computers, Cohen says people must ensure they have good anti-virus software.

“Everybody should have an anti-virus installed from a reputable company and it’s got to be up to date. You’ve got to make sure that all the software running on your phone or your tablet, or your pc is up to date.”

Cohen says anti-virus backup is a grudge purchase and people only understand how important the ramifications of not installing the software are after the attack happens.
