Cyber security company Kaspersky Lab says malware attacks in South Africa has increased by 22% in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter of 2018.

Amin Hasbini, head of global research and analysis for Kaspersky in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa, says the figure translates to more than 13 842 attempted cyber-attacks in SA per day.

That means there are just under 577 attempted attacks per hour, or over 9 per second.

Speaking during an information session in Cape Town yesterday, Hasbini says Android mobile phones in SA are the second most targeted in the world in terms of banking malware with Russia at the top.

He says one of the big trends in Africa last year was an increased focus in attempted cyber-attacks on industrial control systems.

This involves cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure systems like nuclear, dam control, electricity and water treatment facilities.
