A correspondent at TRT World in Turkey has told Radio Islam, Istanbul’s new airport will eventually be able to accommodate 200 million passengers a year, challenging hub rivals in the Gulf and other parts of the world.

Istanbul’s old airport Ataturk is now out of service, and all its equipment moved to a new facility across the city in the biggest logistical operation in commercial aviation history.

With Istanbul’s geographical location which is close to Europe, the Middle East and north of Africa, the current government of Istanbul wants to use the new airport to create a hub or bridge in the center of the world.

Ömer Kablan  says the new Istanbul Airport is an amazing piece of architecture.

“It does have multiple features that many airlines and airports around the world can’t capacitate. We are talking about six runways and four terminals, we are talking about multiple planes to have the ability to arrive and depart at the same time which is one of the very few airports in the world that can capacitate this form of activity.”

Kablan says in its current phase the airport can accommodate up to 90 million passengers at any time.

“Until 2023 construction will continue and it will continue to expand and we are talking about two hundred million people to be accommodated at full capacity which will make it the largest airport in the world.”

Kablan says with Istanbul growing at a rapid pace with a number of multi-billion Dollar projects, Ataturk Airport completed its mission and was unable to accommodate the current amount of passengers arriving in the city or using it as a transit route.
