A 30-year-old Lenasia man has been arrested for perjury after he lied about being hijacked.
It’s understood the man reported the false hijacking to police, describing how his vehicle was taken by suspects armed with a rifle.
Police say when they questioned the victim it was established that the report was false and he had never been hijacked and was instead panicking about the whereabouts of the vehicle.
The false report was made three days after the vehicle was not in his possession.
The police’s Lungelo Dlamini has warned the public who may be continuing to contribute to a perception that crime is out of control by making false reports and wasting police resources in investigating non-existent cases.
“While police were investigating, they established that there were some discrepancies and the man was then arrested for a case of perjury.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Protean Magistrate Court today.
