The United Ulama Council of South Africa ( Uucsa) has confirmed that the moon for the Islamic month of Rajab has not been sighted in South Africa.

Reports widely circulated on social media yesterday indicated that the moon was sighted in Groblershoop in the Northern Cape.

However Uucsa confirmed that the moon was not sighted in any province across the country.

Mufti Mohamed Minty confirmed that all nine UUCSA representatives agreed that the 1st of Rajab therefore would be Saturday, the 9th of March.

“The moon for the month of Rajab has not been sighted this evening and thus the 1st of Rajab will commence tomorrow evening that is Friday and the first day will be on Saturday. There’s been no evidence of sighting of a moon that has been presented to any of the affiliate members of the United Ulama Council of South Africa and this this decision has been confirmed by all its members.”

Uucsa’s affiliate members include the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), Jamiatul Ulama KwaZulu-Natal, Sunni Jamiatul Ulama, Sunni Ulama Council, Eastern Cape Islamic Congress, Council of Ulama Eastern Cape, Darul Ihsaan Humanitarian Centre, the Northern Cape Ulama Council and the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa.
