The Renal Unit patient transport vehicle belonging to the Islamic Medical Association Baytul Nur Trust was hijacked from a patient’s home in Kwa Mashu, Durban early yesterday morning.
The driver was in the process of picking up a patient who was scheduled to undergo renal dialysis at the Fatima and Dawood Hassim Moosa IMA Renal Unit at the Ahmed Al Kadi Private Hospital in Durban.
Two other patients were in the vehicle when it was taken but they were found safe but traumatised.
The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA) is over 40 years old and provides health care needs to the underprivileged irrespective of religion or race. The IMA provides transport patients with chronic renal failure for dialysis which is required thrice weekly.
The theft of the vehicle is unfortunate and callous as it impacts the patients whose life depends on the transport to obtain the life-saving treatment.
