An Imam from London in the UK has told Radio Islam, Shamima Begum is British whether the public likes it or not and should be allowed to return home to her country.

Begum fled from her East London home in 2015 with two female friends to join the ISIS.

Now 19 years old, Begum says she has given birth to a baby and wants to come home, but her family’s lawyer Mohammed Tasnime Akunjee says UK authorities are planning to revoke her citizenship.

British Imam Ajmal Masroor says Begum has a right to go back home.

“Shamima Begum is British whether we like it or not. She has the right to come back and if she has committed any crime anywhere in the world, she should be put on trial for it. At the bottom line, without putting somebody on trial, without getting somebody to go through the judicial process, we cannot become the judge, judiciary and executioner.”

Masroor says the debate surrounding whether Begum should or should not return to the UK has created a lot of problems for the Muslim community.

“The Muslim community has been through a lot. They have faced weakness and experienced a lot of backlash from people who vehemently opposed as well as found her actions rather disgraceful.”

Last week, in her first interview since leaving the UK, Begum told The Times newspaper that she was “not the same silly little 15-year-old schoolgirl who ran away from Bethnal Green four years ago”.
