President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa needs to be cured of the corrosive effects of corruption.
Delivering his second State of the Nation (Sona) address in Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday night, Ramaphosa touched on a number of key moves to restore confidence in the country including a strengthened National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and a reconfigured State Security Agency (SSA).
Ramaphosa says there was an urgent need to establish a directorate within the NPA which will identify priority cases to investigate and recover the assets identified to be the proceeds of corruption.
He says new prosecutions boss Shamila Batohi will lead the revival of the NPA and strengthen the fight against crime and corruption.
“In broad terms, the Directorate will focus on the evidence that has emerged from the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, other commissions and disciplinary inquiries.”
The president says South Africans are tired of corruption have responded in large numbers.
“We recognise, as do all South Africans, that our greatest efforts to end poverty, unemployment and inequality will achieve little unless we tackle state capture and corruption in all its manifestations and in all areas of public life.”
Ramaphosa says a proclamation setting out the directorate’s terms of reference will be promulgated soon.
