A freelance AFP photo journalist and videographer has told Radio Islam how an Islamic heritage site remained unscathed during the Signal Hill and Lions Head fire while the landscape around the monument was ravaged by the blaze.

The fire started just after 4pm on Sunday spreading rapidly to nearby mountain slopes above Fresnaye and Sea Point.

Saawmiet Moos says the fire was so intense and severe it burned the entire side of Signal Hill lookout point including the hoses Cape Town’s firefighters were using to try and extinguish the blaze.

Moos however says the Kramat of Shyakh Mohammad Hassen Ghaibie which is located on the Signal Hill ridge remained unscathed.

He says the fire stopped on the fringes of the Kramat and got as close to the benches outside the monument.

“One looks at it and you know that the spirituality of a lot of people in Cape Town and especially those that are buried here were effectively the forefathers of Islam here in the Western Cape and you look at it and you think that the Almighty has been definitely looking out for these individuals that are buried there.”

Moos says other important Muslim sites across the globe have also been spared by the power of the Almighty
