The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has called on eligible Muslim South Africans to register to vote in this year’s national and provincial elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) hopes to add 1 million more voters to the voters’ roll during the final voter registration weekend between 26 and 27 January.

Jamiat SA says by actively participating in elections, Muslims can also be part of the political process.

Secretary General Moulana Ebrahim Bham says it is the responsibility of every South African irrespective of race or religion to register to vote.

“Through the means of voting we connect our self with our fellow citizens. We also safe guard the freedoms that we have which everyone cherishes in terms of our religious freedoms. By taking part in the voter registration and taking part in the political process we protect our freedoms.”

Ml Bham says Muslims are part of South Africa and those who fail to register to vote do not help in creating a perfect society.
