Political analyst and author Max Du Preez has told Radio Islam the bromance between Cyril Ramaphosa and Jacob Zuma is a charade that is slowly fizzling away and is eroding trust in the president.

Du Preez says many are aware that Ramaphosa can’t stand Zuma and says nasty things about him behind his back.

He says Ramaphosa is aware that Zuma is still popular and undermining him, but it’s about keeping the KwaZulu-Natal vote, a Zuma stronghold safe.

“So what does he do? Does he confront him head on and risk splits and a lot of bad blood in the last few months before the election? Or does he smother him with compliments and fake love which would make it impossible for Zuma to encourage his own people to vote for somebody else.”

Du Preez says while the strategy is good, it is nauseating.

“We have not forgotten that under President Jacob Zuma we nearly became Zaire under Mobutu Sese Seko. It was an ugly last five years and we are going to pay the price for the next ten years. So it’s hard to see that our president that we put so much hope in is embracing that man.”

Du Preez says the euphoria and popularity around Ramaphosa termed Ramaphoria is on hold with many waiting with bated breath to see the outcome of the elections in a few months’ time.
