The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it’s not clear what Jacob Zuma would be paid as the former president embarks on a new “singing” career.
Zuma will be among the thousands of African National Congress (ANC) supporters who will be singing struggle songs when the party celebrates its 107th birthday at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday – But it remains to be seen whether the project with a R25 million budget will go ahead.
The former was approached to feature as a lead singer in the eThekwini City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit’s heritage project, but it appears that the process got off to a bumpy start after criticism from artists and opposition parties including the DA.
The party’s Nichole Graham says they became aware of Zuma’s new career from media reports and a twitter post by Thembinkosi Ngcobo, the head of the municipality parks unit.
She says there’s no formal item of Zuma’s performance that has been proposed to the council and will be writing to the City Manager, asking him to reign in the Parks Unit and put a stop to the project.
“It’s not clear yet what Zuma would be paid for it. I think there is definitely a move to give him a continued platform and for the ANC in eThekwini which is obviously aligned to the Zuma faction to continue to promote their man.”
Graham says the move is slap in the face of emerging artists by the municipality who may not be able to help them but rather promoting Zuma for political purposes.
