Schools across the country began the first day of school on Wednesday with millions of new and returning pupils ready to start the new academic year.

The New Year is a gift of a fresh start & new beginnings for many pupils as they embark on their journey of learning.

Education is the most important and powerful tool which you can use to change the world.

An educated nation begets educated children which equals a harmonious environment on earth provided it is used constructively.

Teary eyed parents and crying children were among the scenes at the Al Aqsa Nursery and Pre-School in Lenasia as the pupils embark on their academic education.

While a few children didn’t want to leave their parents side, Principal Fatima Laher says nursery and preschool education is very important including the teachers who have a responsibility towards the new learners.

“The skills that they learn here will be the foundation for primary school, like schooling life. Here we deal with younger children. Our teachers are experienced teachers so they know how to handle the younger children. Discipline is an important factor as well and I think discipline comes from home.”

These parents Radio Islam spoke to say they are overwhelmed by the children’s first day of school.

“I was crying this morning, but I’m not showing him anything because he himself is crying a lot…”

“It is scary, you think what’s going to happen to them…”

I’m very attached to my laat lammetjie, it’s very hard to see him going out of the house now…”

“It’s very difficult as a parent, I think all parents want to hold on to the children and protect them from everything possible.”

The new academic year is an exciting time for many first time learners with the nursery and pre-school phases a huge foundation to shape their future careers.
