The South African Muslim Network (SAMNET) has urged Muslims to complete a survey to gauge opinions on political matters in the Muslim community.

Samnet says there is currently very little information about Muslims perceptions of the South African political climate in communities.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Samnets Dr Faizel Suliman says the survey will also assist the Muslims, Islamic scholars and the leadership of the Muslim community to gain a better insight to the politics of the country.

“It will help the Muslim community and the leadership of the Muslim community, the Ulama, etc. to look at where we are and obviously there’s an election coming up, there’s a strategy we need ourselves in terms of our engagement with political parties. I am sure the political parties themselves will find this information useful for their own strategy.”

Suliman says he believes there is also a sort of apathy in the Muslim community when it comes to political issues.

“As a community we have since 1994 waned. There are no real politicians of substance younger than thirty five. We’re seeing the last vestiges of probably Muslims in cabinet. I think the 2019 cabinet is going to look very different.”

Sulaiman says Muslims are a substantial community which have many resources  including masaajid, Muslim media and ijtima’s that allow people to network and share information.
