As Eskom struggles to keep the lights with stage one and two load shedding implemented on an almost daily basis, Interpol’s South African ambassador says load shedding may be a blessing for criminals.

Concerns have been raised that crime will increase over the festive season as criminals take advantage of security systems with no power.

It’s understood national police say officers do have the capacity to ensure citizens and their belongings are safe despite being easy targets during load shedding.

Interpol SA ambassador Andie Mashaile says research shared by security company ADT has indicated that crime is on the increase during load shedding.

“Where there is load shedding criminals are always ready and it becomes a serious concern for me, for our mothers, our sisters in all of our communities like Eldorado Park, Lenasia and all over the country.”

Mashaile says security companies and police must increase their patrols during load shedding.
