Johannesburg water has confirmed that the water in Coronationville west of the city including other areas is not contaminated by sewage and is safe to drink.

A WhatsApp message being circulated on social media yesterday claimed the water in the area is contaminated with sewer and that residents should boil all tap water before drinking or cooking with it.

Joburg Water says its laboratory teams have conducted tests of water at various sites, but could not find the source of the contamination.

Spokesperson Isaac Dhludhlu says the message being circulated on social media and allegedly broadcasted on a local radio station is fake.

“We dismiss the message as fake news. Johannesburg water is committed to provide a sustainable service and the quality of water we provide to all residents is safe to drink and the quality is good enough for consumption.”
